Due to the special qualities of the ceramics in Kool-Logs, water transpires through the wall and provides continuous even moisture to the orchid roots for an extended period of time. Just refill the Kool-Log vessel when it becomes empty.

These same special characteristics of Kool-Logs reduce the temperature of the Kool-Log surface. As moisture on the surface of the Kool-Log evaporates, it carries heat away from the log and orchid roots. This cooling effect can reduce surface temperature of the log by as much as 20 degrees or more from the surrounding air temperature.
Kool-Logs are much less fragile than you might think, and with the ceramic body and stainless steel hanger wire, they should last a lifetime. The only reason you should ever have to remount your orchid is if the moss deteriorates or because your orchid outgrew it’s Kool-Log…and that’s a good thing.
